The Land: arriacou is approximately 8 miles in length and 4 miles in width. Carriacou is 16 miles north of Grenada and has a population of approximately 7, 000.
There are three distinct sections of Carriacou, with English, French and Scottish influences. A result of the islandīs changing hands a few times before finally been ceded to England over a hundred years ago. In the northern part of the island in the Windward area one can see and meet the direct descendants of Scottish shipwrights who came to Carriacou and the Grenadines to build ships, and schooners for inter-island and regional trade. Thatīs why to this day the ship builders of Carriacou are world renowned for the seaworthiness of their ships and their fearlessness in navigating the seas of the region. |
